Loss leads to Change: In 2016 I lost my father. He was my everything. I was devastated. After grieving for several months, I reflected. At 31, I weighed 376 pounds and realized I needed to change. My “ah-ha” moment came when I couldn’t see my feet while standing. This sparked a resolve in me: “Change must happen now.”
I learned that weight loss is more than counting calories; it’s a lifestyle change requiring discipline. After consulting family and researching, I discovered this simple truth:
Calories In vs. Calories Out: Burn more calories than you consume to lose weight.
Using online tools, I calculated my Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and realized I was consuming more calories than needed, leading to weight gain.
I started with a daily intake of 2,000 calories, using a food scale to measure portions.
Eating one meal a day allowed me to enjoy the foods I loved in controlled portions.
I began with 30 minutes daily on a stationary bike, increasing gradually.
In the first six weeks, I lost over 30 pounds. However, my weight plateaued several times, prompting necessary adjustments:
Increasing Exercise:
Each time I hit a plateau, I increased my exercise intensity or duration to boost calorie burn.
Decreasing Calories:
I reduced my calorie intake slightly, ensuring I maintained a healthy balance without
compromising nutrition.
Through these adjustments, I eventually lost 176 pounds in 12 months.
Enjoying a variety of foods without overindulgence was crucial.
Fresh fruits and vegetables became a staple, adding volume without excess calories.
"I did not allow my weight to steal my glory."
This journey taught me resilience and appreciation for life. My flavor palate evolved, and I developed a deeper appreciation for good-tasting food. I learned to savor every bite and understand the complex flavors that create a memorable dish.

This experience also helped me comprehend our emotional responses to food. I turned my unhealthy weight gain into a career as a food critic, guided by honesty and integrity. I now explore how food influences our emotions and connections.
I aim to share my journey with others, broadening their horizons and helping them make positive changes in their lives. Through my story, I hope to inspire others to explore their relationship with food and embrace healthier lifestyles.
